Call to the Government of Hungary – Stop intimidating civil society!

Since its re-election in April 2014, the government of Viktor Orbán began a campaign compromising the credibility of Hungarian NGOs and tries to gain control over the funding provided to civic sector independently from Hungarian government by Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein through the EEA Financial Mechanism. In a democratic society, independent civil sector plays a vital role in maintaining the balance to governing power. As demonstrated by Putin’s Russia, the harassment of the civil sector could easily lead to the criminalization of NGOs and could effectively hinder their work. We are convinced that in Central Europe this attitude towards civil society is unacceptable and we find shocking that the democratic government of Hungary started to follow this path.
